(CNN)It boasts a spectacular mural by Brazilian artist twins OSGEMEOS, but Johnny Depp's newly-listed, $12.7 million Los Angeles penthouse is a work of art itself.

Situated atop the striking Claude Beelman-designed Eastern Columbia Art Deco building, in the old downtown area of LA, the actor's nine bedroom, 14 bathroom, 11,500 square foot property has hit the market following his recent acrimonious divorce from actress Amber Heard.

“show-stopper”をとりあげます。以前も取り上げられていたので復習になってしまいますが、一見stopperなので、ショーを止める人(物)というネガティヴな意味かと思いました。確かに、IT業界で使われることもあり、コンピュータ用語で、「ソフトウェアの致命的な問題やバグ」のことを指すようです。

しかし、今回のように演技など芸術に関しては『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「拍手喝采で中断するほどの名演技」というプラスな意味がありました。
「拍手がなりやまず、先に進めない」ということから転じて、人目を引くというような意味であることがわかります。
LDOCEではshow stoppingで“a show-stopping performance is extremely good or impressive”と定義がありました。

掲載されている一部の写真を見ましたが、色鮮やかな壁画が印象的でとても目を惹く部屋だと感じました。(lua)
