JR東海の運転手が運転台に足を上げた状態で運転していた姿がネット上に投稿されたことが記憶に新しいですが、またもや不適切な姿勢での運転が発覚しました。

今回取り上げるのは、“get into hot water”という表現です。この表現をCambridge Dictionary Onlineで調べてみると、“to be in or get into a difficult situation in which you are in danger of being criticized or punished”と定義されていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「苦境に立たされる、窮地に陥る」といった意味が記載されていました。“hot water”には「熱湯」の他にも、口語で「困難、苦境」を表すため、“get into hot water”で上記の意味になります。ダチョウ倶楽部の得意芸がこの段階でよく理解出来た感じです。(ninetails)
