Carp clinch 1st CL title in 25 years

For the first time in a quarter-century, the Hiroshima Carp will finish on top of the Central League.

The Carp beat the Yomiuri Giants 6-4 on Saturday at Tokyo Dome to clinch the CL title, after steadily reducing the magic number for securing the division title that was 20 on Aug. 24.

The Carp are the top seed in the CL Climax Series and will face the winner of the playoff between the second- and third-placed teams from Oct. 12 at Mazda Stadium in Hiroshima for a spot in the Japan Series.

The Carp entered Saturday’s game against the second-place Giants with a magic number of one. Their victory brought the seventh league title for the Carp, and their first since 1991.

It was also the second-fastest title clinching since Japan’s baseball teams were divided into two leagues in 1950. The fastest was done by the Giants, who secured the title on Sept. 8, 1990.

The Carp had finished below third place for 15 straight seasons from 1998. The team secured third place to compete in the Climax Series in 2013 and 2014, but finished fourth last season.

Veteran pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, 41, and infielder Takahiro Arai, 39, meshed well this season with young players — including infielder Ryosuke Kikuchi, 26, and pitcher Yusuke Nomura, 27, to create good team chemistry, overcoming tough competition early on. The Carp took the lead on June 5 and remained there to the end.

今回取り上げる単語は、meshです。網など連想したのですが、今回は違う意味で使われておるようです。

Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、動詞で “be engaged with another gearwheel”や “be or bring into harmony”などと載っておりました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「〈考えなどが〉ぴったり合う，調和する」や「〈歯車などが〉かみ合う」などと載っておりました。

以上をふまえ記事内では、「ベテランピッチャーの黒田選手や新井選手は今シーズン若手選手たちとの相性がぴったりだった」のような意味で使われていると考えました。（Gomez）
