The spread of free Wi-Fi (see below), a public wireless local area network (LAN) that gives users access to the internet, poses a security threat in which people’s information may be intercepted.
Using free Wi-Fi services enables people to access the internet without worrying about how much data they use, but information transmitted by the services is not encoded in many cases.
In June, Tokyo Metro Co. increased the number of stations where its free Wi-Fi service is available to 175. Users must first install an app on their smartphones, and enter their email address and other information. They can then access the internet.

Prompted by tourists
The growing number of inbound foreign tourists has triggered this proliferation of free services.
Foreign tourists cannot get data transmission services on their smartphones at fixed fees from Japanese telecom carriers, and they have complained about high data fees when they check tourist information and the like on the internet.
This prompted the Japan Tourism Agency and the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry to establish a liaison council in 2014 with service companies, operators of commercial facilities, telecommunications companies and others to popularize free Wi-Fi.

今回取り上げるのはinboundです。インバウンド市場という言葉を聞いたことがありましたが、どのような意味なのか理解できていませんでした。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと形容詞で「（米）（航空機、汽船などが）本国行きの（帰り）の、（乗り物などが）到着する、帰りの」という意味が載っておりました。反意語はoutboundです。LDOCEには “an inbound flight or train is arriving at a place [≠ outbound; = incoming BrE]” とありました。イギリス英語ではincomingを用いるようです。 “inbound foreign tourists” までで日本に来ている外国人観光客を表していることがわかりました。（aqua）
