“woodwork”を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「木工技術」「家屋の木造部」という意味のほかに「サッカーのゴールポスト」という意味がありました。試合中はドイツもブラジルも攻撃的で、特にドイツは何度もゴールを狙っていましたが、ボールポストに嫌われてしまっていました。
記事では “hit the woodwork”と使われています。

“woodwork”を使った表現で“come out of woodwork”で「どこからともなく出てくる」というイディオムがあり、以前ブログでも取りあげられています。語源はシロアリが木造部からぞろぞろと出てくる様子からだそうです。
また“fade into the woodwork”で「どこへともなく姿を消す」という表現もありました。恥ずかしくて穴にあったら入りたいということのようです。(lua)
