ソフトバンクグループはイギリスに本社を置くARMホールディングスを買収することを発表しました。

SoftBank set to buy U.K. chip designer

LONDON — SoftBank Group Corp. announced Monday that it will acquire major British chip designer ARM Holdings PLC for about £24 billion, or about \3.3 trillion — the largest overseas acquisition by a Japanese company.

SoftBank aims to strengthen its internet of things (IoT) business with the acquisition of ARM, whose clients include major chip manufacturers around the world.

If ARM shareholders and public organizations approve the deal, SoftBank will purchase all of ARM’s shares by the end of September and make the British company its wholly owned subsidiary.

For the acquisition, SoftBank will use \2.3 trillion of its own funds and procure the remaining \1 trillion through a loan from Mizuho Bank.

ARM designs semiconductors and licenses its technology to chipmakers around the world. Chips designed by ARM are especially desirable for their low power consumption. The company’s technology is said to be used in more than 90 percent of the world’s smartphone chips.

今回取り上げるのはprocureです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみますと、意味の中の１つに「（格式）（苦労、努力して）（…）を手に入れる」とありました。LDOCEでも調べてみますと、 “to obtain something, especially something that is difficult to get” と載っておりました。手に入れるのが難しいものを得るという意味合いがあるようです。入手困難なものの場合はgetではなくprocureを用いるということを覚えておきたいと思います。(aqua)
