熱い夏は冷たい食べ物もいいですが、がっつり系の食べ物も食欲をそそりますよね。

今回取り上げる表現は、 “chow down”です。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “chow”は動詞で “eat”、名詞で “food”そして “(also chow chow) a dog of a study Chinese breed with a broad muzzle, a tail curled over back, a bluish-black tongue, and typically a dense thick coat”とのことでした。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）には、「食料，食い物」とのっており、 “chow down”で「[…を]（がつがつ）食う[on]」とのことでした。また “chow line”で「給食を待つ人の列」となるそうです。 “chow down”と“chow line”はアメリカ英語だそうです。
また『ジーニアス英和大辞典用例プラス対応』（大修館）によると、オーストラリアでは軽蔑の意をこめて「中国人」を意味することもあるようです。
eatではなく “chow down”を使うことにより、がっついて食べるイメージが強まります。
