The role of language use in second language development

Usage-based approaches to language learning view language as a fundamentally social function. It is assumed that processes of social interaction shape the knowledge of language, and the structure of language emerge from patterns of social experience, interaction, and use.

Research in these approaches has demonstrated that patterns of language use affect how people learn, use, and change language. In this talk, I will report on recent advances in the empirical studies and discuss how some of the key findings can be applied to second language classroom teaching.

The view that language learning is initiated through language use has spawned many studies that show second language learning can happen most effectively when learners are active in understanding and making tangible utterances in language use, suggesting that learning is strongly connected with learners' linguistic experience in the classroom.

Starting from discussing the role of input in second language development, I will focus on how learners make generalizations beyond exemplar-based word learning and retention out of which abstract linguistic schema emerge from language use.

I will also discuss how learners gradually create more abstract, interactive schematic representations from their exposure to the target language, in which token and type frequency of linguistic input has significant effects on the development of mental grammar.

Finally, I will look to subsequent implications for second language teaching and discuss ways in which teaching materials can be developed that are based on the empirical research findings.

The talk is delivered in English then key terms and concepts are translated in Japanese.

Munehiko Miyata received his Ph.D. in SLA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2011. He works in the areas of second language acquisition and second language testing. His main area of research is in cognitive and educational dimensions in adult second language classroom settings. He is particularly interested in usage-based models of language learning from which he applies to the investigation of second language development. He speaks and conducts research in English and Japanese, and he is an avid jazz trumpet player in the Tokyo area.
