今回注目する表現は、”beat reporter”です。自分の辞書、インターネット等で検索をしてみたところ、しっくりくる説明のついているものが見つかりませんでした。そこで、先生に提示していただいたサイト、Ask.comで調べてみたところ、次のように定義が述べられていました。
“A beat reporter is a type of reporter that exclusively covers one field of interest, like politics, business, crime, fashion, sports or music. Beat reporters are often very knowledgeable in their specific coverage areas, and may be given license to come up with the ideas for their stories rather than take assignments from editors.”

つまり、この”beat reporter”は、日本語で謂うところの「番記者」に当たります。番記者とは、情報を得るために、特定の人物や団体などに張り付いて、絶えず取材している記者のことです。皆さんも耳にしたことがあるかもしれませんが、それぞれ番記者は、「―番」というように呼ばれます。日本のプロ野球を例にとると、「巨人番」、「阪神番」というふうになります。（Blue Sky）
