This year's first sunrise is seen along with Mount Fuji from a Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft on Jan. 1, 2016. About 300 passengers aboard the popular annual New Year's Day flight observed the scene from an altitude of some 5,000 meters. The flight took off from Tokyo's Haneda Airport before 6 a.m. and waited for the sun to emerge as it cruised above the Yamanashi Prefecture city of Hokuto. When the sunshine finally broke through the clouds above the country's highest peak shortly past 6:40 a.m., cheers and applause filled the cabin.

既に取り上げられているrise and shineを復習します。『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂）には「｟口｠起きててきぱきやる」（--“(old-fashioned) usually used in orders to tell sb to get out of bed and be active”OALD8）という意味です。
『新英和中辞典』第７版（研究社）によりますと，「[通例命令法で] （寝床から）起きる」となっていました。同イディオム辞典によりますと，旧約聖書のイザヤ書第60章に出てくるとあります。この場合は，「雲一つない初日の出」という意味に，「起きて初日の出を見る」，「今日から新しい気持ちで（ぐうたらしないで）物事にてきぱき取り組みましょう」という意味が掛けられていると考えます。（Kawada）
