House of cards: Can traditional New Year’s greetings survive in modern times?
On Jan. 1, legions of Japan Post Co. employees delivered millions of nengajō (New Year’s cards) to homes nationwide.
Over the next few days, employees at the postal company will sort through many more as they deal with a second wave of belated New Year’s cards in the post that have been sent by residents feeling pangs of guilt after receiving a greeting from someone who is not on their mailing list.
With more and more people communicating via social media, however, one has to wonder how much longer this annual New Year’s tradition will continue.
According to Japan Post, New Year’s cards account for about 13.4 percent of all mail sent through the post over the course of a year.
今回取り上げるのは、“house of cards”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“a plan that is so badly arranged that it is likely to fail”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「壊れやすいもの〔組織、体制、機構、計画〕」といった意味が記載されていました。
この表現を直訳してみると「トランプ〔カード〕の家」となります。トランプで組立てると、いつそれが壊れてしまうか作った本人ですら予測できないほど「不安定でもろい構造」となってしまいます。そこから転じて上記のような意味になったと考えられます。今回の記事では、年賀状の伝統がインターネットにとって代わられそうな様子が表れています。(ninetails)
