What if one of the languages is not a “useful” one because, for example, it does not have many speakers (for example, Cornish)? Is it worth exposing the child to it? 本日は以上より"strenuous"を取り上げます。さっそく手持ちの辞書で調べてみると、「1. 精力的な、熱心な 2. ＜運動などが＞多大な努力を要する 」とあります。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』) ODによりますと、"Requiring or using great effort or exertion"とありました。この語は、ラテン語で「活発な」を意味する"strenuus"と形容詞を作る接尾辞"-ous"からなっています。"make strenuous efforts to do"となると「...するために懸命に努力する」となります。(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)
