piddling

少し前の記事になります。New York Times からです。ギリシャで、前首相の辞任に伴う議会選挙運動がありました。投票が、日本時間２０日の午後から始まります。

今回取り上げる表現は、“piddling”です。まず、意味を確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）には、「ささいな、わずかな」と記載されていました。英語の定義を見てみると、Dictionary.comには、“amounting to very little”とありました。とても量が少ないことが分かります。今回の場合、“a piddling crowd”と使われており、「わずかな人」という意味になると思います。同じ段落で、“earsplitting”という表現も気になり、調べてみたところ、「甲高い」とありました。(Nao)
