Architect firm loath to alter stadium design / Structures by Hadid often left unbuilt
LONDON — The unusual design of the new National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics is said to be the biggest factor in the cost overrun for its construction, but one of the directors of the designing firm doesn’t think it should be changed.
Total construction costs for the new National Stadium will be \252 billion, surpassing the initial estimate by nearly \90 billion, according to a revised plan that was announced Monday by Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Hakubun Shimomura. The stadium was designed by London-based architect Zaha Hadid.
