Teruo Masaki / Takushoku Univ. judo master aims for Olympic greatness
Twenty-two years after the death of Takushoku University alumnus Masahiko Kimura (1917-1993), who is regarded as history’s greatest judoka, the university’s judo team has finally received a new shihan, or master instructor. Teruo Masaki, 68, another alumnus of the school, holds the grade of eighth dan.

Kimura went over to professional wrestling in 1951, with a 1954 match against Rikidozan attracting nationwide attention. The legend returned to the university in 1961 and led his alma mater to win the national judo championship.

今回取り上げるのは、“alma mater”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“the school, college etc that someone used to attend”と定義が載っていました。また『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』には、ラテン語派生で「母校」または「（母校の）校歌」という意味がありました。中世のキリスト教では、この言葉はキリストの母である「マリア」を意味していたため、現在では「今の自分の生き方などに大きな影響を与えた母校（特に高等教育機関）」を指すのに用いられることも多いそうです。(ninetails)
