スポーツ行政の新たな司令塔として「スポーツ庁」の設置法が、本会議にて全会一致で可決、成立しました。

Diet OK’s new sports agency

Aiming to establish a new agency as a control tower for sports administration, the revised Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry Establishment Law was unanimously approved and enacted in the House of Councillors plenary session on Wednesday.

The Sports Agency, which will be launched on Oct. 1, will implement measures that include supporting athletes and developing facilities going toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and the promotion of people’s health in an integrated fashion.

ここでは“plenary”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第3版』には「1.＜権力などｇが＞完全な；絶対的な 2.＜会議などが＞全員出席のもとに行われる」とあります。本文中にある“plenary session”は「本会議、総会」という意味で用いられています。“plenary”自体も、名詞として使われる際は同じ意味合いになるようです。

スポーツ庁は2020年東京五輪・パラリンピックに向けた選手強化や各種整備などを請け負うようです。初代長官は、国際大会での経験に富んだ五輪メダリストやアスリートを中心に人選を進められるとのことですから、誰が任命されるのか、楽しみの一つとなりそうです。(potter)
