New York Today: It’s That Cold
By Annie Correal and Andy Newman

It was 11 degrees as of 10 a.m. with a wind chill of 0.

We asked readers to come up with new ways to describe the cold that has descended on the city.

Let’s just say we were blushing as we read your responses, and somewhere, a witch is, too.
Here are the ones that caught our eye, and can be repeated:

It’s as cold, you say, as…

• … The gates of Gramercy Park.
• … Barneys in August.
• … An uptown girl.
• … The N.Y.P.D.’s shoulder.
• …The Knicks.
• … The Times’s review of Guy Fieri’s Times Square restaurant.
• … Your mother-in-law, her mashed potatoes or her response to the dish you brought for Christmas dinner.
• … Putin’s face, glare, heart, soul.
• … Obama’s ears.
• … A snail’s bottom.
• … A freezer-burned rocket popsicle in deep space.
• … Holy Mother of God freezing cold. (Get inside, reader Pamela!)
• … So cold “that the exhibitionist on my block will only describe himself.” (That’s an old one.)
• … “2015’s new year is colder than 2014’s Ice Bucket Challenge,” wrote Hilary Nigrosh.

And our favorite:

“Colder than yesterday,” wrote Mas Ichida from Morningside Heights.

He was right when he wrote that on Wednesday night, and he’s right today.

The high will be only 19 degrees. The wind chill will not get above 5 degrees.

Tonight will be a little less cold as clouds move in. Some snow — under an inch — will fall on
Friday as the mercury inches toward freezing.

Bundle up, check on your neighbors, and call 311 if you see someone who needs shelter or your heat isn’t working.
