Japan to greet New Year with 'Kohaku,' prayers, shopping and blizzards
Millions of people will visit temples and shrines in Japan on Wednesday night and all day Thursday, gather at family homes to feast on soba noodles and watch the New Year variety show “Kohaku Uta Gassen” (Red and White Song Contest) on NHK on Wednesday night.
Though it has lost some of its luster in the past 10 years, “Kohaku Uta Gassen” is still considered the most prestigious TV music program to be invited to appear on. Up to 40% of Japan’s TV audience is expected to watch the four-hour program, which features established 51 acts and J-pop stars. Songs from the megapopular Disney hit “Frozen” will have their own segment this year, so get ready for an overdose of “Let It Go.”
Shrines are expected to be crowded on Wednesday night. Meiji Shrine in Tokyo has brought out stocks of lucky charms and set up large offertory boxes as it prepared to welcome a huge wave of worshippers overnight.
