Panel revises up chance of a big quake in Kanto

Seismologists have revised upward the chance of a very big earthquake in Tokyo and vicinity within the next 30 years from zero to 2 percent to a maximum 5 percent.

The government's Earthquake Research Committee on Friday released revised possible magnitudes and chances of powerful quakes near the Sagami Trough.

The trough extends from Sagami Bay to off the Boso Peninsula in the Kanto region that includes Tokyo.

The panel has modified the estimates for the first time in 10 years.

They expect a quake of up to magnitude 8.6 to occur. This is based on the latest scientific knowledge and the analysis of the massive earthquake in northeastern Japan in 2011.

Based on marks in the movement of the earth's crust and sediment brought by tsunamis, researchers found that earthquakes of around magnitude 8 have been taking place in intervals of 180 to 590 years.

revise upは経済の見通しなどのニュースでよく出てくる表現です。「上方修正する」という意味ですね。じゃあ反意の下方修正は?Umeチャンですね。(UG)
