Former Miss International causes outcry over ‘comfort women’ comments

A comment by a former international beauty queen has earned the ire of right-wing Japanese after she expressed “embarrassment” over the conduct of some politicians who refuse to accept their country’s responsibility over the forcible sexual labor of women during the Second World War. Former 2012 Miss International Ikumi Yoshimatsu made the comment while guesting on a CBS radio show last month.

Women’s rights activist and show host Robin Morgan asked Yoshimatsu about her opinion on the issue of wartime sexual slavery. She described feeling “embarrassed” by the opinions of some politicians and “angered” by their refusal to compensate the comfort women who were victims of the Japanese Imperial Army. People in Japan who heard her statements took to social media to lambast her. Comments were posted immediately on her Facebook page calling her an “international embarrassment” and a “dumb beauty queen.”

(Ume)
