middle lane hogging

(Koyamamoto)

Why you shouldn't be a lane hog
Honest John hears from a reader who doesn't believe there's much point in a law against hogging the middle lane
The law against lane-hogging is a waste of time, just like the law against using mobile phones while driving. Why? Because these laws rely on traffic police to enforce them and we no longer have enough pf those for the work to be done effectively.
GR, Faringdon
You are right about the lack of cops. But we will see some lane-hogging footage on the regular traffic police TV programmes and that might help to educate some people. On the M40 recently I drove for six miles at about 68mph in the completely empty nearside lane, while other drivers braked and honked at anything from 50-70mph in two heavily congested "overtaking" lanes. Such scenes are all too typical. And once brake lights come on, it has a chain-reaction effect that eventually brings traffic to come to a complete halt further back along the motorway.
