集大成

アスリートにとって去り際というのは非常に重要で難しい問題ですが，ソチオリンピックを終えた浅田真央選手の今後に注目が集まっています。オリンピック前から浅田選手はソチでの演技を「集大成」という言葉で表現していました。その「集大成」にあたるのがculminating actです。culminateはすでにブログで採り上げられていますが「最高点［絶頂, 最高潮］に達する, 全盛をきわめる」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味。これはラテン語で「頂点」を意味するculmenに由来するものです（『新英和中辞典』研究社）。オリンピックが最後の滑走と思っていた人も多いと思いますが，記事によればまだ継続の可能性も残っているのですね。（Koyamamoto）

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's figure skating darling Mao Asada is still debating whether she will hang up her skates and retire, saying her chances of continuing her career are fifty-fifty.
… On the one hand, the time would seem right for the two-time world champion since she had declared the Sochi Olympics to be her culminating act. On the other, Asada, who won the silver medal at the Vancouver Games, is conflicted after finishing in a disappointing sixth in the women's singles competition, despite rebounding with a resplendent performance in the free skate.
