stock up on

恒例のNew York Todayからです。

Good Wednesday morning.

It is 13 degrees. The wind chill is zero. Welcome to the calm before the storm.

• Another 6 to 10 inches will bury the city starting late tonight. To the north and west, totals are likely to top one foot.

• The snow will start around 2 a.m. It may change to sleet or rain in the city and other coastal areas for part of the day. But

whatever the stuff is, it won’t stop for 24 hours.

• A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight tonight till 6 a.m. Friday.

• Regional shortages notwithstanding, the city has 135,000 tons of salt on hand for its 6,300 miles of streets. “We feel that 135,000 tons will be sufficient,” a Sanitation Department spokeswoman said.

• Today will be increasingly cloudy, with a high of 27. Nice enough weather to stock up on basics.

stock up on はわかりやすいPVです。「水や食料などの(生活)必需品をまとめ買いする」という意味で,日本語でも「〜に備えてまとめて買っておく」などと言います。onを付けるかどうかは議論が分かれるところですが(cf. cut down on~),米国流はonが付くようです。(Shou-VR*)
