Police to arrest factory worker over alleged frozen food poisoning
Police on Saturday moved to arrest a factory worker at a Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc. subsidiary over the poisoning of some of the company's food products with a pesticide, which has left more than 2,000 people across Japan who ate them falling ill.
The nine tainted frozen food products, such as pizzas, croquettes and fried chicken, were made in October and November last year, according to the subsidiary, Aqlifoods Co. They were made on separate production lines before being packaged in the same room. The packaging showed no signs of tampering.
The pesticide, malathion, is not used in the factory and was unlikely to have come from the ingredients, leading police to believe the products were intentionally laced with the chemical sometime during production.
