Troops deployed on anniversary of Uygur riots

China has deployed a large number of security troops in a Uygur Muslim city on the anniversary of deadly riots 4 years ago.

Troops are in position in Urumqi, a central town of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Armored vehicles are patrolling the streets.

Friday marked 4 years since anti-government rallies turned into deadly riots. Chinese authorities say about 200 people were killed.

 Muslim Uygurs make up at least 40 percent of Xinjiang's population. But they complain of a wide gap with the Han Chinese who dominate politics and the economy. Restrictions on religious activities are also fueling discontent.

Protests have been reported in the region since spring.



The Chinese government fears they may lead to broader social unrest, and appears determined to crack down on dissent.

 One Uygur resident said he feels monitored and is uneasy. He also said he wants authorities to address the ethnic inequalities.
