ネイティブ通信から。今、英国人の文を米語に「翻訳する」というなんともわけのわからないお仕事をさせられています。ある表現になじみがなかったので、言い換えを試みました(AWのネタにするかもしれないので、ここでは紹介できないのが残念!)。それでも、パラフレーズした表現のニュアンスが気になったので相手に確認をしたところ:
And yes, I would say your paraphrase is dead on.
という答えが帰ってきました。
deadは「死んでいる、枯れている、まひしている」など様々な意味を持つ多義語でみなさんにはおなじみですが、ここのdeadはlock onでおなじみのon(「ピッタリ」)をさらに強調するために用いられる限定用法です。
LDOCEで確認すると、"completely or exactly - used to emphasize what you are saying"とあります。「まったくの,完全な」という意味ですね。用例にはThe train came to a dead stop (=it stopped completely).、The arrow hit the dead centre of the target (=the exact centre).、I've given the whole thing up as a dead loss (=completely useless or a complete failure).のほか、John tells me it's a dead cert, we can't lose (=something which will certainly happen, win, succeed etc).という言い方も載っていますよ。(UG)
