impediment

　今回は、ある授業で出会った英文からの落ち穂拾いです。取り上げる英文は、イングランド国教会の結婚式の礼拝で用いられていた『祈祷書』(The Book of Common Prayer)の“if any man do allege and declare any impediment why they may not be coupled together n matrimony…then the Solemnization must be deferred until such time as the truth be tries”という一節で、赤字のimpedimentに注目します。
　impedimentには「〈格式〉妨害(物)，障害(to)」という意味がありますが(『ルミナス英和辞典』第2版，研究社)、上記の英文では特に「婚姻上の障害[制限]《近親・未成年など》」との意味で用いられています(『ジーニアス英和大辞典』)。

　ちなみに、Thomas Thorpeによって1609年に出版されたWilliam Shakespeareの『ソネット集』116番では、最初の4行において
　Let me not to the marriage of true minds
　Admit impediments; love is not love
　Which alters when it alteration finds,
　Or bends with the remover to remove.
と述べられています。そして、同詩の２行目にあるimpedimentsという言葉は、このentryの冒頭で取り上げた『祈祷書』の一節を踏まえおり「結婚障害」を意味しますが、ここでは「真実の心と心の結婚の」障害を指しているそうです。（Phantom）
