メジャーリーグベースボールの試合にて、ダブルプレーでは無かったプレーがダブルプレーの判定を受けてしまいました。

Friday in Seattle, the Texas Rangers escaped the second inning after converting a double play ― except, the runner at first was never forced out. Seattle’s Jesus Sucre hit a grounder and tried to leg out a hit, and after getting the force out at second, Elvis Andrus throws the ball to first. Texas pitcher Justin Grimm arrives to cover first (which first baseman Mitch Moreland had well covered anyway), and actually snags the ball before it arrives to the man covering the base. Grimm quickly went back to the mound and acted as if nothing sinister had happened, and the umpires upheld the call of a double play.

今回はleg outに注目したいと思います。文脈からも想像できますが、「《野球》足で安打［ヒット］を稼ぐ」(英辞郎 on the WEB)という意味になります。また、英英でも調べてみると、"to make (as a base hit) by fast running"(Merriam-Webster Online)と定義されています。「足で安打を稼ぐ」という表現をどう英語で表すか考えると、難しく考えてしまいそうなのですが、leg outと簡単な表現で表すことができるのですね。(Astroriver)
