wheel out

イングランドの自国の映画に対する自虐的な批評は、毎度のことながら興味深く思います。今回はThe Independentから英語表現を拾います。タイトルからして面白いので、よろしければ御一読下さい。

さて、赤字のwheel outに注目します。持っているほとんどの辞書には、ここで使用されるPVのwheel outは記載されていませんでした。そこでOEDを調べてみると“to bring (someone) in, as for an interview, meeting, performance, etc”とあります。一方、ウェブ版Macmillan Dictionaryでは、“to mention or to use someone or something that has been mentioned or used many times before, often so many times that people are now bored with them”とあり、こちらの方がややシックリくる感じがします。まとめるとwheel outで「うんざりしているのに、同じ事を何度も(誰かに)言う(行う)」という意味合いを見出すことができます。何となくJane AustenのPride and Prejudiceのベネット夫人を想像しました。
