Mom, 3 children die in snow-buried car
Jiji-Daily Yomiuri
NAKASHIBETSU, Hokkaido--A woman and her three children have died after their vehicle became buried by heavy snow, which apparently blocked the exhaust pipe and sent poisonous carbon monoxide back into the trapped vehicle.
A rescue team found the four unconscious in their car in Nakashibetsu at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday. They were later confirmed dead at a hospital.
According to Nakashibetsu Police Station, the victims were Kazuyo Miyashita, 40, of Nakashibetsu; and her children Misa, 17; Sayo, 14; and Daiki, 11.
According to the police, Miyashita called an acquaintance at about 5:40 p.m. and told him her vehicle had been buried by a large pile of snow on a prefectural road in the town's Mataochi district.
Another man, who was told about the situation by Miyashita's acquaintance, went to the scene and found the four slumped inside the car at about 6:30 p.m., and called an ambulance.
Police said the car was mostly buried by snow, with only part of the roof visible when the four were found.
