on the chopping blockは直訳すると「まな板の上」になりますが、「逃げ場のない状況で、絶体絶命の窮地に追い込まれて」という意味になります。（英辞郎 on the WEB)　このイディオムを見て、まな板の上で調理されるのを待つ魚を想像しました。
