Feel All the Weight of His Position

A 49ers Lineman Really Does Feel All the Weight of His Position

NEW ORLEANS — Joe Staley has a dream. It is not about football, really, and certainly not about winning a Super Bowl title, though Staley, a San Francisco offensive lineman, would very much enjoy that. It is about his pants.

At first, Joe Staley did not want to be a lineman.

Ten years ago, Staley arrived at Central Michigan as a slim and lanky tight end. He was 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighed about 220 pounds and wore, he said, jeans with a 32-inch waist. After playing his freshman year at tight end, though, his coaches told him they wanted him to switch to the offensive line, a move that would require him to “put on a little weight,” he said.

As it turned out, that was a slight understatement. Staley gained roughly 80 pounds, ballooning to a 300-pound behemoth who tried to manhandle opponents on every play. When he finished playing football each day, he returned to a pair of pants that had morphed into a size 40.
“I was miserable,” he said this week, recalling the days when he was forced to gorge himself into becoming gargantuan. He added, somewhat wistfully, “I’m very much looking forward to being a slim and trim guy again someday.”
