Sendai airport closed after WWII bomb found

A major airport in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, was closed Tuesday after construction workers found an unexploded bomb believed to be from World War II.

All 92 flights in and out of Sendai airport were cancelled after the 250-kilogram bomb was uncovered during construction near a runway, local police official Hiroshi Ouchi said. The bomb was identified as American-made and is believed to be a dud from World War II. from World War II.

dudはみなさんにはおなじみの単語かもしれませんが、自分の復習のため、チェックしておきます。dudは形容詞として「偽に、役に立たない」という意味がありますが、名詞の意味では俗語で「不発弾、失敗」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)です。人や物に用いられる際は「役に立たない人[もの]」という意味(ibid)がある事も確認しておきます。LDOCEには第1義の意味で"something that is useless, especially bacause it does not work correctly"とあったので、もしかしたら人に使われる事の方が多い表現なのかもしれません。
