foul play(回答)
遅くなりましたが、UG先生のご指名質問に挑戦致します。質問内容は以下の文でのfoul playについてです。foul play - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から

The police quoted the woman as saying, "The detergent given to me from an acquaintance burst out when I shook it."
Those injured were near the woman, the police said, ruling out foul play. A detergent-like liquid was in the bottle, the police said.
All the passengers got off the train at the station and the train cars were moved to a rail yard. More than 10 fire engines were deployed at the scene that witnesses said was briefly thrown ito chaos.
foul playはみなさんもご存じの通り、「[遠まわしに]暴行、殺人、凶悪犯罪」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)ですが、今回は「殺人、暴行」という意味ではという今回の場合はrule out「〜をありえないとする」「判断する」という意味(ibid)のPVと一緒に使われているので、「事件性はない」、もしくは「犯罪ではなく事故だった」といった意味なのではないでしょうか。今回の事件を知った時、現場が地下鉄だった事もあり、地下鉄サリン事件を想起したこと方は多いのではないでしょうか。個人的にはここでfoul playという表現を使った筆者はあの事件が頭にあったような気がします。(EnDough)
