tender

(EnDough)

Justice minister likely to quit over past yakuza ties

Justice Minister Keishu Tanaka is planning to step down after admitting to having had ties with an organized crime syndicate about 30 years ago, a government source said Friday.

Tanaka is making arrangements to tender his resignation to Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda in the near future, according to the source. The resignation of Tanaka, if realized, comes less than one month after Noda reshuffled his Cabinet.

In the morning, Tanaka skipped a Cabinet meeting for "health reasons," government officials said. A senior member of the Democratic Party of Japan, headed by Noda, said Tanaka, who would be the first member of the Cabinet to quit since Noda reshuffled it on Oct. 1, has been in a Tokyo hospital for medical checkups.

The opposition camp is likely to try to take political advantage by attacking Noda for appointing Tanaka, who doubles as state minister for the issue of North Korea's abduction of Japanese nationals.
