usurp/ on the grounds of

こういう場合にusurpを使うのですね。私だったらexceedやsurpassを使ってしまうところですが、本文ではusurpを使っています。他動詞usurpは以前に「（不法な手段で）入手する」「〜を占有する、権限なしに用いる」と習いました(『ジーニアス英和辞典』大修館)。各辞書を見てもそれ以上の定義を見いだせません。

”to take someone else’s power, position, job etc when you do not have the right to”
OALD
”take (somebody’s power, right, position) wrongfully or by force”

このusurpは「王座を奪う」時などに用いられますから、もしかしたらトップにあるものが、他のものに取って代わられた時に、比喩的に使われるのだと思いました。

それと、最後のパラグラフにはわらってしまいした。このon the grounds of〜は「〜を理由に」という意味で、(tasteの訳が難しいですが、ここでは)歌詞や音楽のスタイルを理由にある曲を使うことを避けているのですね。(Othello)
