Growth and decline: how grammar has been changing in recent English

要旨：The process of grammaticalization is associated with recent increases of frequency in English - e.g. the increasing use of the progressive aspect and semi-modal verbs such as be going to and have to. On the other hand, some modal auxiliaries and the passive have declined. I will ask why do such changes (both of increase and decrease) happen? In exploring this theme, I will refer to corpus linguistic findings based on diachronic corpus resources.
