私の大好きな（というよりも青春そのもの）ピアニスト、ホロヴィッツとその調律師フランツ・モアを描いた舞台を三谷幸喜が演出すると聞いて、かなり興奮しています。
フランツ・モアは２０世紀に活躍した偉大なピアニスト達（グールドやルービンシュタインなど）の調律をしていました。音楽界ではかなりの有名人です。(余談ですが、2009年にホロヴィッツの録音全集というのが発売され、70枚入りのBOXになっているのを買いました。)
私にとって、「調律師」はすぐに口をついて出る英語ではありませんでした。記事では、モア氏を説明する部分にa piano technicianとありました。カタカナ語の「テクニシャン」に引っ張られると演奏の方をイメージしてしまいます。
英語のtechnicianはLDOCEの第一の定義に"someone whose job is to check equipment or machines and make sure that they are working properly"とありますので、確かにピアノ本体の「技術者」にはこの単語がピッタリですね。
カタカナ語の「（ピアノ演奏）のテクニシャン(someone who is very skilled at something)」に関してはホロヴィッツの説明にあるpiano masterがいいのではないでしょうか。それしても、あの気難しい性格のホロヴィッツ役を演じる俳優が誰になるのか大変、気になります！！(Minnesota)
Actor Ken Watanabe, 52, who is active in Japan and Hollywood, will return to the stage next year after a 12-year absence when he appears in the play, “A Dialogue With Horowitz” at PARCO Theater in Tokyo’s Shibuya.
The play, directed by Koki Mitani, will be run from next February through March.
Lately, playwright Mitani has been releasing plays specifically about the struggle of European artists, such as “Les Confidents,” a story set in Paris, and “Kokumin no Eiga, set in Berlin. This time, though, he shifts his focus to America to write about piano master Vladimir Samoilovich Horowitz, and Franz Mohr, a piano technician who supported Horowitz’s legend.
Although the role of Horowitz has not yet been cast, Watanabe will play the part of Mohr, TV Asahi reported. “The last time I was on stage was also the first time in about 13 years,” Watanabe told a news conference. “I come back when people forget, like a cicada. Returning to the stage always means something very extraordinary as it created my basis as an actor.”
