in the teeth of〜 ほか

明日からパラリンピックが始まります。イングランドの各新聞社では、オリンピックに引き続きパラリンピックの開催国として、パラリンピックをどのように解釈するのか、という問題提起がされております。今回はThe Independentにある「パラリンピックの精神がいかに作られたか」という内容の記事から英語表現を拾いたいと思います。記事自体も面白いので是非、ご一読ください。

さて、最初の引用箇所は、ドイツの医師で「パラリンピックの父」であるルーヴィッヒ・グットマンが何をしたかが記されています。赤字で示したin the teeth of~についてです。これは「〜にも関わらず、〜に逆らって」という意味です。あとに続く〜の箇所には「逆境、困難」を意味することばが続きます。「公然と、面と向かって」の意味であるin the/one's teethと同じくteethが比喩的に用いられているイディオムです。

なお次の引用箇所のbarも地口を使い、しゃれているのであわせてチェックしてみてください。(Othello)
