The Long, Slow Death of First Class

By Jack Nicas | The Wall Street Journal – Fri, Jul 20, 2012 11:09 AM AEST

With its upgrade to business class, however, American will face a problem airlines have struggled with in recent years: little difference in quality between first and business class, despite a big price difference. First-class fares can be about two-thirds costlier than business class, according to fare consulting firm Harrell Associates.

Though American's new first class will afford more privacy, the seats in both the new first-class and business-class cabins recline into beds and the meals in both will be recipes of the same celebrity chef.

On American's current three-class planes, first class includes more-formal china than business class, more options for toppings on salads and sundaes, and its signature service: a flight attendant will change a flier's seat into a bed while the flier changes into American Airlines pajamas in the bathroom

United, meanwhile, will have better premium seats but fewer of them next year when it concludes a redesign of its largest planes that began in 2006.

Mitch Muroff, a software-firm manager who has flown more than 700,000 miles on United, said he worries the overhaul will make it harder for passengers to upgrade to a premium seat. United said that while there may be fewer premium seats available, it received more complaints about outdated premium cabins and decided to renovate them.

On some planes, United will cut first-class seats to make room for a larger business class. Mr. Muroff said he and most other corporate travelers appreciate that change. "There are only two things I care about: proper sleep and a proper meal," he said. "I don't need pajamas."
