Boxing: 'Shizu-chan' no laughingstock, advances in women's world c'ships

QINHUANGDAO, China (Kyodo) -- Comedian Shizuyo Yamasaki, who has taken up boxing, won her first bout at the women's world boxing championships on Monday, taking a step toward the London Olympics.

The 33-year-old Yamasaki, who goes by the stage name ''Shizu-chan,'' was down 11-7 to Uzbekistan's Shahnoza Nizamova after the first round of the middleweight bout but knocked down her opponent to take the second round 9-7.

Yamasaki continued to lay into Nizamova in the third round, scoring two more knockdowns before the referee stopped the fight after 1 minute, 54 seconds, marking her first international victory.

Yamasaki needs to be the highest finisher from Asia in the weight class to qualify for the Olympics. She next faces Andrea Strohmayer of Germany on Tuesday.
''I'm still in it,'' the 1.82-meter Yamasaki said after defeating Nizamova, a former 24-year-old kickboxer. ''I wasn't sure how many points I had, but I didn't think I was up given the way the coach was yelling at me.''
''When I saw her getting tired, I decided to give it everything I had. I just went mad,'' she said.
