Pregnant woman, 7-yr-old girl killed after car hits schoolchildren in Kyoto Pref
CRIME APR. 23, 2012 - 04:10PM JST ( 25 )KYOTO —
A seven-year-old girl and a pregnant woman were killed Monday morning when a car hit a group of elementary school children in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture.

Five children were seriously hurt when the car, driven by an 18-year-old male without a license, crashed into the nine youngsters and one adult.

Yukihi Matsumura, 26, who was seven months pregnant, and Mao Odani, 7, were declared dead several hours after the crash, which happened at around 8 a.m. as the children were being taken to school.

Matsumura’s unborn baby also died in the accident, a police spokesman said.

According to police, the children and Matsumura were walking along the side of the road when the minicar failed to make a left curve and hit them.

Police arrested the driver, who cannot be named because he is a minor. He said he and his two passengers had been joyriding since late Sunday night. Local media reported that he might have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

“He has said he was playing around all night,” a police spokesman said, while declining to spell out whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The incident came less than two weeks after eight people were killed when an apparently epileptic driver crashed a minivan into pedestrians in Kyoto.
