イングランドに旅行に行くときは必ず買うTime Outから英語表現を拾います。やはり気になるのは劇。フランス人が演出し演じる歴史劇『ヘンリー５世』が気になります。

さて、赤字で示したtour de forceとはどんな意味でしょうか。これは「力技」や「力作」「快作」という意味です。やはりフランス人が演じるからでしょうか、このtour de forceはフランス語由来の言葉で"feat of strength"というのが元の意味。とくにイングランド人の愛国心が非常に強く表れる史劇を外国人が演じることは、面白い試みだと言えるでしょう。

ちなみに、記事にあるGlobe to Globeとはグローブ座で行われるシェイクスピアの劇の祭典のことで、世界中の国や地域が一堂に集まり、それぞれの言葉でシェイクスピアの劇を上演します。(Othello)
