mend fences

カルザイ大統領がタリバンと平和的和解を目指す話し合いをしようしています。mend fencesは「関係を修復する」という意味の表現ですが（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社），この表現にはtry to get friendly againというニュアンスが入ります（LDOCE）。関係修復できるかどうかわからないが，とにかく話し合ってみようというカルザイ側の気持ちが感じ取れます。

In December, he recalled the Afghan ambassador in Doha. A delegation from Qatar is expected to arrive in Kabul shortly in an attempt to mend fences.
