今回注目するのは，catch someone off guardです。アナログテレビの時代が終わり，何千人もの人々にどのような影響を及ぼしたのでしょうか。早速辞書を引いてみると，catch [take, throw] O off (O’s) guardで「＜人＞の油断しているところを襲う，不意をつく」とあります（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。End of analog era catches thousands off guardは「アナログテレビが終了し，（まだデジタルテレビを買わなくていいやと）油断していた数千人の人々を襲った」となります。本文を読めばわかるように，thousandsは「地デジへの移行が間に合わなかった人々」を指します。
