Car subsidy program runs out of gas early

Government subsidies to encourage purchases of environmentally friendly vehicles dried up Wednesday, fueling fears that the end of the stimulus step could adversely affect an economy already threatened by the yen's precipitous gains.
The announcement that applications will no longer be accepted for the stimulus program aimed at boosting consumer spending came earlier than the planned Sept. 30 expiry, after most of the \583.7 billion in allocated funds ran out.
While a decline in new car sales is expected following last-minute buying before the program ended, an official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said he hopes tax-reduction measures for fuel-efficient cars that will continue until 2012 will help buttress the economy.
He also said METI ended the subsidies because continuing the "temporary measure" introduced after the global financial crisis hit in 2008 would probably trigger a steeper drop in sales after the program is over.
