Memorabilia from Michael Jackson concert tours have been stolen from Daimaru department store in Kyoto, investigative sources said Tuesday.
今回採り上げるのはmemorabiliaです。辞書にはmemorabiliaで「（注目すべき事件・人・事柄の）遺品」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版，大修館）。「遺品」というとrelicもあるので，memorabiliaがどのような時に使われるのか気になり，両者の違いを調べてみました。
The New Oxford Dictionary of English（Oxford University Press）によると，まずrelicはan object surviving from earlier time, especially one of historical or sentimental interest.という定義されていました。これに対してmemorabiliaの定義はobjects kept or collected because of their historical interest, especially those associated with memorable people or eventsとなっており，このことからrelicには「長い年月を経ても残っている」という意味があることがわかりました。
このことは語源を見てもわかります。relicはOld Frenchのrelique（remains）に，memorabiliaはLatinのmemorabilis（memorable）にそれぞれ由来します（The New Oxford Dictionary of English，Oxford University Press）。relicは客観的な「残っているという事実」に力点が置かれているのに対し，memorabiliaは感覚的であることがわかります。（ゼミ生 ともびっち）
