toss and turn

世間では3連休。でも大学関係者にはそれはもう死語（dead language）。これから名古屋です。月曜日も授業です。
夜半の地震（午前１時１０分頃）で目が覚め、それからtoss and turnでした。こういうときに限って…。ともあれ、今年最後の名古屋。行ってきます！（UG）

down-to-earth #2

down-to-earthと聞きますと「現実[実際 ]的な、地に足のついた」 （『ジーニアス 英和辞典　第３版』大修館） でお馴染みかと思いますが本文では「気取らない」 （ibid） という語義もあります。確認のため Oxford Dictionaries Onlineも当ってみますと’ with no illusions or pretensions’と載っていました。 （cf.down-to-earth - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から）(Shou-VR*)

防衛費が前年比の2.2%に上昇したという記事です。
Japan's next defense budget to post biggest rise in 18 years

In the latest flare-up in tension between Japan and China, Beijing last month declared a new air defense identification zone in an area that includes disputed East China Sea islets, triggering protests from Tokyo as well as Washington and Seoul.

この記事の中に出てくる，”flare-up”を『Wisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）で調べると「起こる，激化する」などという意味がありました。増額した要因は円安による影響が大きいとも書いていましたがやはり防衛のために設備投資などを行っているのだと思います。今後の動向が気になります。（Ume）
