sow panic

(Minnesota)

14 killed, 50 wounded at shooting during 'Dark Knight Rises' premiere at Denver cinema
WORLD JUL. 20, 2012 - 08:10PM JST ( 29 )

DENVER —
At least 14 people were killed and some 50 wounded Friday when a gunman opened fire at a crowded cinema premiere of the latest Batman movie in the U.S. state of Colorado, police and media said.

Witnesses interviewed by local media described a scene of chaos at the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” saying the gunman had set off tear gas bombs and opened fire in the packed theater in Aurora, a suburb of Denver.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister,” said Aurora police chief Dan Oates. “They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire.”

Ten people were killed at the scene and another four died later at local hospitals, he said, adding that police had arrested the alleged gunman and that there was “no evidence” of a second, after earlier reports of two shooters.
Oates said the suspect had claimed to have explosives at his residence and that the apartment complex where he lived had been evacuated and was being searched.

Police spokesman Frank Fania told CNN the suspect was in his 20s, wearing body armor and armed with a rifle and two handguns, adding that he had set off some kind of smoke device in order to sow panic.

Witnesses described chaos chillingly similar to that depicted in the Batman films—in which maniacal villains terrorize Gotham City—suggesting the movie could have inspired the shooting spree.

They said several audience members had shown up in costumes, which could have allowed the gunman to blend in with the melee and complicated the arrest.

Police did not provide details about the killed and wounded, but the PG-13 film would have attracted scores of teenagers.

mug shot

(Minnesota)

The suspect in the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater screening of the new Batman film early Friday had colored his hair red and told police he was "the Joker," according to a federal law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation.

At least 12 people were killed in the rampage and 59 were wounded.

A mug shot of James E. Holmes has not been released. Witnesses to the shooting described him as wearing a gas mask that concealed much of his face and head. But the federal law enforcement source's information about the suspect's appearance fits with a statement from New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who was briefed by Colorado authorities Friday.

(GP)

JPBPA unanimously votes to boycott WBC
Staff writer

The Japan Professional Baseball Players Association decided against participating in the next edition of the World Baseball Classic during a meeting on Friday in Osaka.
In what was called a "heartbreaking" decision by union head and Hanshin Tigers star Takahiro Arai, all 24 player representatives (two per team) voted against participating in the tournament, which is slated to be held in 2013. Japan won the previous two editions of the WBC in 2006 and 2009.

agonizing decision

(GP)
Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) has insisted the champions will field a team but Friday’s decision will come as a blow to their hopes of completing a remarkable three-peat.

“Until the organizers change their position on the justifiable rights of teams to sponsor and merchandising rights, we will not take part,” players’ president Takahiro Arai told reporters.

“We have not had a response to our demands and it looks unlikely we will get one,” added the Hanshin Tigers player. “We know the fans want us to play and we want to play but we have had to take this agonizing decision.”

cast a pall

Shootings cast pall over 'Dark Knight Rises' blockbuster weekend

http://edition.cnn.com/2012/07/20/us/colorado-theater-shooting/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

(UG)

quasi-beer

(GP)

Suntory to stop selling happoshu

Suntory Holdings Ltd. plans to stop producing and selling happoshu low-malt quasi-beer, becoming the first major brewer to exit the happoshu market.
The firm finished producing its core happoshu product, "MD Golden Dry," in June, and all of its happoshu products should disappear from stores by autumn.
Suntory was the first company to start selling happoshu with its "Hop's Nama" in 1994. Happoshu became popular thanks to its price, which is lower than beer because it contains less than 67 percent malt. But the happoshu market began shrinking in 2003 when "third-category beer," which mainly contains ingredients other than malt and is even cheaper than happoshu, was launched.

Trojan horse

An ongoing probe, in which around 2,000 computers at the ministry were checked, turned up 123 that were infected with Trojan horse malware, which is often sent as an e-mail attachment with the purpose of giving a hacker unauthorized access to a computer.
The ministry, which has yet to identify the route of the infection, has already changed the hard-disks on the affected computers while limiting data transmission when they are connected to the Internet.
The virus was not detected by antivirus software installed on the computers, triggering speculation it could be a new type of Trojan horse, ministry officials said.

(Sugiuchi)。

one's thoughts are with~

という表現に相当するのがこのone's thoughts are with the victims and their familiesというフレーズです。 (GP)

'Dark Knight' director: Shootings 'devastating'
NEW YORK (AP) -- "The Dark Knight Rises" director is speaking out about the Colorado theater slayings, calling it a "senseless tragedy" and "devastating."

In a statement released Friday night, Christopher Nolan expressed his sadness about the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. A gunman opened fire on an audience watching a midnight screening of the highly anticipated movie, killing 12 and injuring 59.

Nolan called movies a great American art form and said watching one is an important and joyful pastime. He called the theater his home, and said committing violence against innocent people there is savage and "devastating."

He added that the cast and crew's thoughts are with the victims and their families.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is the final film in Nolan's Batman trilogy.

capsize

(“1788, a nautical word of obscure origin, perhaps (as Skeat suggests) from Sp. capuzar "to sink by the head," from cabo "head." ZANZIBAR, Tanzania (AP) – Tanzania's government on Saturday halted rescue operations for a ferry accident that appears to have killed 146 people.
Government official Ali Juma Shamhuna said 69 passengers were confirmed dead and 77 were still missing, but the rescue efforts were called off because it was unlikely to still find any passengers alive in the Indian Ocean three days after the accident.
The ferry MV Skagit, which capsized Wednesday while traveling from the East African nation's economic capital Dar es Salaam to the island of Zanzibar, was carrying 291 passengers, although it had only been certified to carry 250, he added.
