KYOTO--A small crystal-encased Buddha that was discovered at a temple here may have been the handiwork of the studio of master Buddhist sculptor Kaikei around the end of the 12th century, according to an expert.

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「...を安置する、(人が場所・地位などに)落ち着く、くつろぐ」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “to settle yourself in a place where you feel comfortable and safe” と定義されています。Oxford Living Dictionariesをみると、由来はLate 16th century (in the senses ‘fortify’ and ‘shelter within or behind a fortification’; formerly also as insconce): from en-, in- ‘in’ + sconce.となっています。
この仏像はなぜ水晶の中に入れられているのでしょうか。その答えは実に計算され尽くしたものでした。水晶を通すことによって、実際よりも引き締まった形に見えるように工夫されていたのです。昔の人の芸術に対する知恵というのは改めて素晴らしいと感じました。(seventh-dan)
